Biography
My happiest memories are summers at our cottage on Lake Couchiching, spent with my mother, grandmother, siblings, and whichever cats happened to be part of our family at the time. Even the brightest landscapes hold shadows, and these complexities continue to inform my art.
As a teenager, I began to realize that not everyone had the same level of security and privilege that I did. Watching news stories of the Vietnam War and driving past the nearby “Indian reserve” left me questioning “why” and shaped my worldview.
My career allowed me to work in places where people truly cared about improving others’ lives. I first managed the redevelopment of a large psychiatric hospital in central Alberta. I later worked as a health planner at the Somerset West Community Health Centre in Ottawa. A strong sense of purpose guided both organizations.
Along the way, I continued taking art courses and hoped to explore my creativity further someday. Retirement has finally given me that opportunity. Today, my work often reflects my ongoing commitment to social and climate justice, especially my support for women’s education and the end of gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
And some things never change. I still love cats and am always happy to share stories about the adventures of Brando and Charlie, the cats who now share our home with my partner of 47 years, Pat.
Statement
As a visual artist, my work delves into the interconnectedness of all things. Through the language of line, shape, and colour, I seek to illustrate the harmony that binds us and the discord that arises when these bonds are broken, ignored, or disrespected. My line work acts as a bridge, uniting abstract shapes and vibrant hues to bring complex concepts to life.
My approach to the subject matter is intuitive. I often paint landscapes, both interior and exterior, many of which are drawn from my childhood experiences. A lifelong dedication to peace and social justice fuels my artistic exploration. I strive to create works that provoke reflection and spark conversation, offering viewers a space to engage with the issues that matter deeply to us all.
I enjoy the freedom of learning by trial and error, applying layers and scraping away, and introducing solvents to create unexpected visual effects. I like discovering new possibilities within each project and having fun.
